"This is now my 11th version of 3ds Max that I have used and one of many that I have reviewed. It is sort of crazy for me to think that these powerful tools have been around for this long and just how much they have changed and improved. As my 3D tool of choice since back when it was called 3d Studio, this software package has seen me through a lot, including my recent projects Rock Band, Guitar Hero and Guitar Hero 2, as well as some fondly remembered projects such as Frequency and Amplitude. Things that my teams and I have struggled with early on are now history and the tools become more and more powerful by the year. Along with tool enhancements, Autodesk has focused these past years on making use of the drastic leaps and bounds that hardware has made in the past three years. This year’s version of 3ds Max has taken on the new moniker of 3ds Max 2008 instead of using the typical "rev" number. This sent warning pings down one of my lead artist’s spine when he found out. While I understand that making major leaps and bounds each year is difficult, there are only so many years you can please the crowd with "speed enhancements." Things are looking good on the horizon, though. The elusive in viewport texture painting and brush-based modeling holes in 3ds Max will soon be resolved, as Autodesk has acquired Skymatter and its Mudbox 3D modeling software."

I came across a very nice 3ds max script for converting Triangular faces to Quad faces. The good is that it keeps the UV Mapping intact on the polygons which it converts to Quads. Ah…and it works on an Editable Polygon only and not Editable Mesh….but overall it serves the purpose I was looking for. I tested it with 3ds max 9 and it works smooth..

Polygonmap 4.0 is an easy Solution to texture map your polygons in 3dsmax 8/9. The Polygon modifier allows you to set planar mapping of selected polygons and change the orientation of the maps by selecting the  edge or by maximum (minumum) lengths of edges in each polygons.

Coke Render Tutorial using the traditional scanline rendering engine…This is an old test where I wanted to show the power of the 3dsmax’s Scanline rendering. Download the Coke scene and you need to check out the combinations and the power of the 3dsmax’s native Materials for rendering using with scanline render. I feel Scanline needs a bit of tweaking but if you are skilled enough with the Material Editor features you can achieve the quality you are looking for. Vray or Mental Ray could too produce good results but I wanted to explore the possibilities with the scanline rendering. See closely the fog effect on the window glass pane..those are simple material tricks by which you could achieve the results as the render displayed below. I hope this tutorial would prove useful to you for your future rendering/material editor skills.
